I read this one too. This one is really confusing, I didn't get it.

Before reading the story, I thought it would be about the Disney character. However, it wasn't. I think Donald Duk should find a different way of getting out of fights. No one should put him or herself down for no reason. I think he should gain his respect some other way. His dad is right about not looking scared in Chinatown, but was incorrect in making the gangsters laugh at Donald's name. Maybe that was just a temporary solution, but I don't know.

I think maybe Donald can just change his name or have a nickname.

What implications are there for Donald if he changes his name? It's true he doesn't like it, but should he have to change it just because other people don't like it? What about all of those whose names get changed by someone else (a teacher, for example) because it's difficult to that person? What do you think about this phenomena?

I feel kind of sorry for Donald Duk because people laugh at his name, but maybe his parents didn't know about the cartoon character. He could probably choose a nickname for himself, but I don't really think it's so great for his parents to know that he hates his name so much he wants to change it. It could be a bit insulting for them. His dad told him to just laugh along with the other kids when they made fun of him. Interestingly, that's exactly what my dad tells me to do.

Why is Donald so ashamed of his heritage and feels left out, both in
the Chinese and American world?

Shows how a smart Chinese boy is ridiculed because his name is spelled
and sounds similar to the popular cartoon character Donald Duck. The
gangs pick on him, and all the teachers in school ever talk about is
how the Chinese do ridiculous customs that nobody really enjoys.

I don't feel sorry for Donald Duk at all. He needs to gain some self-confidence. He needs to be proud of his name no matter what it is. He neees to be proud of his Chinese heritage as well.

I'm not exactly sure why he was ashamed of his heritage. It might be because he was living in the U.S., and in school people learned about the stereotypical chinese. I guess that he felt insulted when learning about Chinese in an American school.
Basically, he just needs self-esteem.
