rel="stylesheet" not "carstyle"

I have been trying to link to my external style sheet to my html but the css won't show up. if i do the the css inline the styles show up, but if I put the same style in an external stylesheet it doesn't work. The html and the stylesheet are both uploaded into the same folder and I used this tag in my head
<link rel="carstyle" href="carstyle.css" type="text/css" />
What am I doing wrong?
