AIM in class
2006/06/28 13:18:42 PDT by aqhong

If anyone wants to get on AIM in class, and wants something more full-featured than AIM Express, but is too lazy to go download and install Trillian/Gaim/Miranda/whatever... I have a copy of Miranda on my flash drive that'll take all of 30 seconds to set up on your computer (no installation necessary, unless you count copying and pasting a folder). It can also connect to MSN, ICQ, and Yahoo! IM.

If you're interested, find me. If you don't know who I am, I look something like my avatar. And if all else fails, I suppose you could just yell "Alex Hong!" at the top of your lungs, and I'll come find you :P

Okay, I bite. What makes Miranda better than all the other AIM clients?

Haha, okay.

Good things about it:

  • Completely free and open-source

  • No installation necessary (which makes it portable)

  • Extensible via plugins (which gives you access to pretty much all the features you'd have to pay for elsewhere *cough*TrillianPro*cough*)

  • Not a bloated mess, unlike Trillian

  • A native Windows app, unlike Gaim

  • I don't think I have to compare it to AOL's client XP

Bad things about it:

  • OSCAR protocol plugin isn't complete, which means certain advanced AIM features are missing

Actually, I wouldn't even have noticed that downside if Kenton hadn't mentioned it a while ago, because I personally don't use a lot of the features OSCAR provides. But I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Basically, I like Miranda because it's very customizable, and can be as simple or as sophisticated as you want it be :)

Hahaha, poor Alex. Adium X is nice too...except for the fact that it's Mac only.

WTF? o.O

Alina and I owe you a freaking-out, Terrance. After we're done plowing through this CSS, which we both have to redo to some extent....-_____________________________-;

Yes, Adium kicks ass. Seriously, there are very few open-source apps with the level of polish and sophistication that Adium has. The only other one I can think of is Firefox.

It is fairly fugly by default, yes. The one on my flash drive has been prettified, however ;P
