What'd you guys think of his lecture....i was quite surprised about Myspace and all the other Social Networking stuff..Myspace kicks some serious butt...but i had no idea Flick3r was that big..i actually learned some stuff from that...so yea...

MySpace

Anecdotes about the popularity of MySpace (Pono and his cousins, little kids swarming Lloyd's PowerBook at recess, Lloyd is not a kiosk, etc.)
People use MySpace because their friends use it (circular reasoning)
People use MySpace to keep in touch
Wikipedia article on MySpace is "disputed" because so many users have different ideas of what MySpace is

Social Networking

Social networking has existed since the caveman days, but the online element is a recent addition
Social networks that preceded MySpace: Yahoo! Groups, LiveJournal, etc.
Some networks are more popular in certain regions/demographics (Friendster in the Phillipines, Orkut in Brazil, Facebook with college students, etc.)
Googlefighting: Only Flickr rivals MySpace in popularity

Future of MySpace

20th Century Fox, The Simpsons, American Idol: all properties of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
MySpace is now also owned by News Corp. (expect tie-ins with other News Corp. properties)
Speculation: social networking services will converge in the future

MySpace and You

Someone in your generation will bring about the next big thing in social networking
If that person is you, be like Bill Gates, and use your money to help people (eg. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation)
Also, go watch An Inconveninent Truth (The future is yours!)

I'm probably leaving out some of it, but this is all I can remember. I hope this shows that I was paying attention :P

i should ask lloyd one day if i can check my myspace on his laptop...hehe...man i didn't know how addicted teens were to it..i mean just asking a stranger...wheew!

I think it also had to do with that thing called 'aloha spirit' in Hawaii, Arnold. People there area just assumed to be friendlier than on the mainland. This is quite generally true.

And Alex... that's an excellent listed synopsis! Very close to my actual notes. I did leave out (or forget) some crucial points in my notes, but I suppose this what weblogs and course websites are for. ;-)

I actually want to 'extend' the lecture and discussion of MySpace here onsite. Perhaps on this thread, maybe on the other MySpace one. But will do that this weekend. Too busy this afternoon.
