The Prince, political philosophy

So I finished Machiavelli's The Prince over the last couple days. That book was pretty sic. Useful stuff if you ever happen to go back in time 500 years and have to secure your principality.

No but seriously, it was really pretty cool stuff. We should discuss a little political philosophy, just as a sampler dish I think.

What was the book about? Where did it take place? And I do definantly agree...if we decide to go into religion and aesthetics I definitely think that we should be able to go into politics aswell. They play an immense amount of influence upon our lives as it is.

I have never read "The Prince", but I do know some about it:
It is for the way to secure your principality (as Croato said). In "The Prince", Machiavelli does state that a "morally good prince" should not be held back praise, but a prince to truly control with efficiency must not adhere to the laws of morals and ethics to help the empire.

I should get it! :D

machiavellian=the ends determine the means. i.e., i killed a bunch of people but now i'm king so everything's cool. i mean, hey, i'm king. that's what matters.

"wow, this place is almost as big as cartman's ass!"

Haha that makes me think of a Calvin&Hobbes comic. If anyone could find it from google that would be awesome.

Calvin and Hobbes are walking down this long winding road. During the first four panels Calvin is telling his stuffed tiger Hobbes all about this sort of philosophy: the ends justify the means, your outcome makes sense of what you did. While talking, Hobbes suddenly pushes him off the road into a mud puddle. Here is what Happens:

*Hobbes pushes Calvin straight into a mud puddle*
Calvin: HEY WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!?!
Hobbes: You were in my way. Now you aren't. The ends justifies the means.
Calvin: HEY ONLY I CAN DO THAT!
Hobbes:*rolls his eyes* Oh.

I also read the Prince. But kind of got lost of some of the contents since i read a lot more afterwards. But think it might be cool to discuss the Prince or other great text (like for instance the ethics from Spinoza or beyond good and evil Nietsche) here in the chatroom with some people.
