Chat

To use this chat, just click "Connect" and you'll be taken to a chat window. Its pretty much the same as an AIM chatroom. You must be logged in to access the chat room. Here are some commands for it.

  • /me - Sends an emote to the screen, e.g. if your username is JohnDoe, typing "/me says hello" will print "JohnDoe says hello". You can also do other stuf "/me plays tennis" will print (is my username is johndoe)"johndoe plays tennis".

  • /away - Sets your status to Away. Type a message after "/away" to set it as your away message (optional).

  • /back - Sets your status back to normal.

  • /beep - With no parameter, causes a sound to be played to everyone who has the first checkbox checked (i.e. wants to receive a beep when someone sends a general beep). If you specify a username after /beep, it will cause the sound to be played just to that user and only if they have the relevant checkbox checked.

  • /tell - Send a message to a specific person. Follow the /tell with the name of the receiver, then your message. (If the receiver's name has a space in it, do not type the space.) For example, "/tell JohnDoe What's up?". /tells will only be visible to you and the receiver. Please note that /tells are logged, and administrators will be able to see all /tells in the log to prevent abuse.

  • /roll - Have the server pick a random number between 1 and whatever number you specify, e.g. "/roll 20" will pick a number between 1 and 20. Yes, you can play RPGs with this function.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To the course iTA and students... the new Virtual ATDP policy is to turn off auto-logging of chatroom conversations. If you need to log a chat session for explicitly course-related discussions, please first obtain permission from the TVA sysadmin -- me! :-)

Thanks,
Lloyd Nebres
