Awards System
Last updated at 2005/07/15 22:11:29 PDT by gandalf

In an attempt to promote user activity, I've established an internal ranking system to reward active users. Generally, I will award one point (perhaps more) for each quality post on a forum, comment on a blog, etc... Please do not post simply for the sake of upping your post count. I can detract from scores for disruptive posting. (Use your better judgement.) For special occasions, I may award more than one point.

If you check the user list, you may see that your score is reported as current score/total score. The total score is the count of all the points a user has ever accumulated (including points awarded and detracted). The current score however decays exponentially (with a half-life of three months according to temporal) so that more recently awarded points have a greater weight. The following are the different ranks based on total point levels:

  • 0 - 4 points: New Member

  • 5 - 24 points: P vs. NP

  • 25 - 49 points: Hodge Conjecture

  • 50 - 99 points: Poincare Conjecture

  • 100-249 points: Riemann's Hypothesis

  • 250-499 points: Yang Mill's Theory

  • 500-999 points: Navier-Stokes Equations

  • 1000+ points: Birch & Swinnerton Dyer

These seven ranking levels are the seven millenium problems in mathematics, in case you were curious. Furthermore, there are specific awards that are enabled at certain point levels:

  • Signatures: Users who acheive the level of Poincare Conjecture or higher can choose their own signatures.

  • Avatars: Users who acheive the level of Reimann's Hypothesis can choose a small image or icon to act as their avatar on the forums.

  • Post Colors: Users who acheive the level of Yang Mill's Theory can choose their own background color for posts in the forum. (The default is a bland white).
