AP Biology and Intelligent Design

Hi all,

I'm concerned about the possible introduction of the so-called intelligent design "theory" into the AP Biology curriculum. Do you think this is an important thing to study in a college-prep Biology class? I'm curious about the problems that students and instructors might have with this change.

hi,

I think that the introduction of intelligent design "theory" is not necesarily a bad idea. This is not to say that I think intelligent design explains biology, but the mere introduction of such a theory does not necesarily do harm. Without evolution, the whole basis of biology is basically null and void. One of the times that students and intsructors might have problems with this change is when instructors explicitly say that intelligent design is how things came to be the way they are. Likewise, students might become offended if they only believe in creation and intelligent design.

So I think that intelligent design is not necesarily an important thing to study in-depth in a college-prep Biology class, but mentioning it as an alternative theory as we did in my school's biology class could be worth the while.
