Regular school wins!!!
If a home school and a regular school were compared together to see which was better, who do you think would win? Well, let us find out! A home school is where a child is taught their daily lessons by their own parents. The child does not go to regular school, but usually stays home to study the lessons that their parents taught them. There are generally no “classes” that consists of many other children that are there to learn also. As you should know, a regular school is taught by lots of different teachers, and has a lot of students. For a teenager student like me, regular schools are better than home schools, because the student will develop better social skills at school, the students have a chance to be more well rounded, and schools have teachers who specialize in specific subjects.
First, students who go to regular schools will eventually develop social skills that home school students probably would not develop as well. Regular school students will have the chance to interact with all kinds of people who are different. For example, they can talk to Caucasians, African Americans, Indians, Asians, people who are mean, people who are friendly, people are really smart, people who are “popular”, people who are very good looking, people with different talents and personalities. Even though some of these different kinds of people are not the easiest to live with, the students will sooner or later learn how to deal with and tolerate them. About two years ago, I met a girl who was homeschooled for her whole life. She came to our school only for a couple days to take the standardized tests with us. She practically did not talk at all, and she always sat alone. She would also be very nervous when she talked in front of the class, or even to a group of friends, because she was not used to so much people. My friends and I had to confront the girl first. We had no problem talking to her very naturally and friendly, but she was very shy and did not want to talk to others much. Home school also blocks off the children from competition. Competition makes a child hard-working and persevering. Social skills are very important to a child’s life and their life in the future.
Secondly, regular schools allow the children to be more well-rounded. For example, in a regular school, the students have a chance to join the sports teams, while home schools do not have any sports team. The sports team makes the student fit and in shape. In home schools, when they are not learning, they probably just play computer or watch TV all day, which is not the best way to keep fit. When it is summer time, and I have summer school, the time that I have when I am not working on my summer school homework, I usually play computer or watch TV. The sports team also teaches the students how to play as a team, and not just by yourself. Home schools cannot provide this lesson, because there are not enough people to play as a team, or even work in a group project. Also, regular schools have a student government, where students can lead their whole grade. This experience teaches them about leadership and how to be a leader. When I was in the student government, I learned how to control a big group and how to plan events out. In the beginning, I was stressing over everything and was not sure if I could do all of it, but in the end, I just got used to it. Regular schools allow the students to be more well-rounded if they want to be.
Finally, regular schools have different teachers who specialize in different subjects. If one person specializes in one specific thing and not a lot of different subjects, then that teacher must be REALLY good and knowledgeable in that subject. If different teachers who focus on different things all teach the same class or student, then that class will learn A LOT. They combine all of their knowledge into that one class or student. In home schools, only one person teaches the child/children, which is usually the parent. It is very hard for the parent, because he or she has to spend time teaching the child, so they are not able to get a full-time job. Besides, they do not even make money for teaching their own kid privately. To teach so many subjects all over again is very stressful for the parent, because they have to spend their time studying and teaching every single subject by themselves. They also have to make sure that they are going the same pace as regular schools. My dad said that even he would not be able to home school me, because it is just too hard, and my mom would have to work really hard on her one job. My dad graduated from UC Berkeley too! Homeschooling is hard for the parents, and not as good for the child.
Therefore, regular schools are better than home schools. It is easier to learn social skills in regular schools; you can be more well-rounded in regular schools; and regular schools have more teachers, so there is not that much stress on one teacher. If I could choose what kind of school I want to go to, I would surely attend a regular school that has lots of kids and teachers.
